Rainbow Six Siege X, the biggest update to Ubisoft’s team-based tactical shooter to date, has seen its player count on Steam jump by more than double to 142,000 concurrent players. Rainbow Six Siege X launched alongside the game’s Operation Daybreak season on June 10, nearly a decade after the original game’s release back in December 2015.

Although Rainbow Six Siege has received consistent tweaks over the last 10 years, the new update has brought a number of changes and gameplay overhauls to Rainbow Six Siege X, addressing longtime player concerns with quality of life improvements to the game’s visuals, audio, and mechanics. Rainbow Six Siege X treated players with five modernized maps, improvements to directional audio, a new communication wheel, and balance updates for several operators. Content added in the new update includes a new 6v6 mode, additional operator dialogues, and Enlisted and Field Training playlists.

Rainbow Six Siege X saw its player count explode from around 60,000 concurrent players to a 24-hour peak of 142,025 just a few hours after the update went live on June 10. The tactical shooter is currently sitting at the number five spot on Steam’s top 100 most-played games, just barely trailing behind Dune: Awakening. While the addition of a free-to-play mode for Rainbow Six Siege X undoubtedly helped boost its popularity, the game still managed to jump up to number five on Steam’s top sellers list, which is ranked by revenue.

Rainbow Six Siege Sees Huge Jump In Player Count

The massive overhaul has brought a number of both new and experienced players into the fray, attracting many with modernized graphics and free content for Rainbow Six Siege X. However, with the introduced free access tier restricting players to 26 total playable operators and the Unranked, Quick Play, and Dual Front gameplay modes, it’s possible that Rainbow Six Siege X won’t retain many of the new players it picked up in the hype of the update’s release. Only time will tell if Rainbow Six Siege X is an enticing enough transformation to meet or surpass the shooter’s all-time peak of 201,933 concurrent players, which was reached on May 17, 2024.

On the other hand, Rainbow Six Siege has a reputation for being one of the more competitive shooters out there, which can be quite intimidating for those just now looking to join a squad. With the more competitive modes like Ranked restricted to paying gamers, Rainbow Six Siege X’s free tier could offer an experience that caters more to the casual player than the game has in the past. Plus, with the addition of features like the new communication wheel for players who prefer to stay off-mic, Rainbow Six Siege X might bring the changes necessary for bringing in more players.
