Crystal Dynamics, the renowned studio behind the Tomb Raider franchise, has confirmed a new round of layoffs, marking its third such occurrence since being acquired by Embracer Group in 2022. The studio attributes this decision to “evolving business conditions,” emphasizing the necessity of these measures to ensure the long-term health of the studio and its core creative priorities in a continually shifting market.
In a statement shared on social media, Crystal Dynamics expressed gratitude toward the affected employees, acknowledging their hard work, talent, and passion. The studio also committed to providing full support and resources during this transition.
Despite the workforce reduction, Crystal Dynamics assures that the development of the upcoming Tomb Raider game remains unaffected. The game is being developed using Unreal Engine 5 and is funded by Amazon Games. However, specific details regarding the game’s progress and release timeline have not been disclosed.
This recent round of layoffs follows a series of workforce reductions at Crystal Dynamics. Earlier this year, the studio laid off 17 employees, citing the need to better align with current business needs and future success. In 2023, an additional 10 staff members were let go for similar reasons.
The ongoing restructuring within Crystal Dynamics and the broader gaming industry reflects the challenges faced by studios in adapting to changing market dynamics and the increasing costs associated with game development.
