A new mod for Skyrim Special Edition brings back the beloved spellcrafting system from Oblivion, giving players the ability to create custom spells by combining a variety of magical effects. Titled Fourth Era Spell-Crafting, the mod allows players to mix and match spells they have learned, adjusting parameters such as magnitude, area, and duration. Magicka cost is calculated automatically based on these settings, ensuring balance while providing unprecedented flexibility in spell creation.
The mod also integrates alchemical effects, enabling players to incorporate potion ingredients into their custom spells. It includes a “spell forgetting” feature, allowing players to remove spells they no longer need, and a portable crafting option: the Tome of Spellmaking, obtainable from Sergius Turrianus at the College of Winterhold, lets players craft spells anywhere without relying on stationary altars.
Developed by modder Ezmeralda, Fourth Era Spell-Crafting is provided as an ESL (Elder Scrolls Light) file, so it does not count against the player’s plugin limit. It requires SKSE (Skyrim Script Extender), Address Library for SKSE Plugins, and SKSE Menu Framework for proper functionality.
This mod is part of a wider movement in the Skyrim community to expand the game’s magic system. Other popular efforts include Spell Crafting for Skyrim, which offers a similar spell creation system, and Spell Research, which allows players to compose spells from scratch and create spellbooks and scrolls.
The return of custom spellcrafting has been enthusiastically received by the community, with players praising the depth and creativity it brings to Skyrim’s magical gameplay. As modders continue to innovate, the game’s flexibility and replayability are set to grow, offering players ever more ways to personalize their adventures in Tamriel.
