A recently leaked video has ignited excitement among Fallout fans, revealing a range of upcoming merchandise set to appear at Target stores across the United States later this year. However, eagle-eyed fans have noted that at least one of the items appears to feature AI-generated artwork, raising questions about Bethesda’s marketing approach.

On September 2, a Reddit user on the Fallout subreddit shared a short clip showing them unpacking Fallout-themed products in a warehouse. According to the user, these items are expected to hit Target shelves in November or December. Although the original video was later removed, Kotaku was able to view it beforehand and confirmed the merchandise appeared genuine. Among the items was a bottle of Fallout-branded hot sauce, packaged in a box displaying artwork on the back.

The image in question depicts a couple eating the hand of a Deathclaw, a well-known creature from the Fallout universe. Observers quickly noticed several unusual details: the man is using a knife and fork to cut a napkin rather than food, the fork itself has an odd shape, and the man’s right hand appears unnatural. These anomalies led many to speculate that the artwork may have been generated using AI.

Kotaku reached out to Bethesda for clarification regarding the image but had not received a response at the time of publication. It is possible the company contracted a third-party studio to create the artwork rather than producing it internally.

The use of AI-generated imagery in marketing has become increasingly common over the past two years, as companies seek to reduce costs while demonstrating to investors that they are keeping pace with emerging AI technologies. This is not the first time a Fallout-related image has sparked discussion among fans for its unusual, AI-like qualities.

Despite the oddities in the artwork, it is unlikely that collectors or enthusiasts will be deterred from purchasing these items, a fact that aligns with the companies’ hopes that AI-generated content will not diminish consumer interest.
