LEGO’s highly anticipated Game Boy set has unexpectedly hit store shelves weeks ahead of schedule, sparking excitement among fans eager to relive a piece of gaming history in brick form.

Originally announced on July 23, 2025, the set was slated for preorders beginning July 24, with an official release date of October 1, 2025. Priced at $59.99 USD (or €59.99 / £54.99), the model is part of LEGO’s adult-focused collection and contains 421 pieces.

The build closely mirrors the original Nintendo Game Boy at nearly a 1:1 scale, standing over 14 cm tall and 9 cm wide. Every signature detail of the handheld console has been recreated: the directional pad, A and B buttons, START and SELECT keys, as well as contrast and volume dials. A slot for cartridges is included, along with two brick-built game packs inspired by The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening and Super Mario Land. These can be displayed with lenticular screens that create a shifting, animated effect when tilted, giving the illusion of gameplay. A start-up screen element is also part of the design.

Despite its realistic look, the LEGO Game Boy does not actually function as a video game console. The buttons and screen elements are static, designed purely for display rather than interaction. LEGO has emphasized that the moving visuals shown in promotional materials are created by lenticular prints, not by any electronic components. The marketing campaign intentionally echoed Nintendo’s iconic 1989 Game Boy commercial, but the product itself is firmly a collector’s display piece.

The set’s early arrival has fueled buzz among fans, many of whom rushed to secure it before the official launch. With an accessible price point and meticulous attention to detail, the LEGO Game Boy captures both the tactile joy of LEGO building and the nostalgia of Nintendo’s 8-bit golden age.
