Nearly eleven years after its debut, Final Fantasy XIV is encountering its most pressing hardware challenge yet: the limitations of PlayStation 4 storage. Director Naoki “Yoshi-P” Yoshida confirmed that despite efforts to sustain support for the aging platform, Sony’s standard OS restrictions are beginning to interfere with the arrival of new game content.

Yoshida revealed that Square Enix has repeatedly requested and received special waivers from Sony to internally expand data capacity for Final Fantasy XIV. However, those exceptions are tapering off, and the company can no longer guarantee indefinite support. He stressed that while the team remains committed to legacy hardware, technological ceilings may eventually force an end to PS4 compatibility, and players will be informed with clear rationale when that day comes.

This development arrives as Final Fantasy XIV has continued releasing significant updates, including the recent 7.3 patch titled The Promise of Tomorrow. Yet as the content grows, so does the strain on outdated hardware. Fans are already speculating that the next major expansion, presumably version 8.0, could signal the final chapter of the MMO on PlayStation 4, a fate similar to what the developer once announced for PlayStation 3 in 2017.

Similarly, other multiplayer giants are gradually abandoning support for last-gen consoles, leaving Final Fantasy XIV among the few major titles still maintaining backward compatibility. With the PS5 firmly entrenched and rumors of PlayStation 6 already swirling, the industry shift is clear. For now, PS4 players can continue their adventures, but the clock is ticking, and the next big expansion may well mark the end of an era.
