Final Fantasy XIV appears to be nearing the end of its lifespan on PlayStation 4 as the long-running MMORPG begins to push against the technical boundaries of Sony’s last-generation console. Director and producer Naoki “Yoshi-P” Yoshida acknowledged that the team has already requested and received special accommodations from Sony to expand the PS4’s operating system capacity, but those allowances are reaching their limits. He stressed that while the development team wants to support legacy hardware for as long as possible, there comes a point where the hardware can no longer meet the requirements of the game.
Square Enix has pledged to maintain PS4 support through the Dawntrail expansion, a commitment first outlined in 2022 during a Letter from the Producer livestream. However, newer expansions are placing increasingly heavy demands on system resources and graphical capabilities, leaving PlayStation 4 players unable to take advantage of visual overhauls planned for other platforms. Yoshida emphasized that if support for the console must end, the company will explain the reasons clearly to its players.
The situation reflects a broader shift in the industry, with many major online titles beginning to phase out PlayStation 4 support. Rust went offline on the platform in May 2025, The First Descendant followed in June, and PUBG is scheduled to discontinue PS4 service in November. Genshin Impact will be delisted for new PS4 users this September and will become unplayable in April 2026 when a new patch is deployed.
For now, Final Fantasy XIV remains available to PlayStation 4 owners, but the game’s future on the system is clearly limited. As Square Enix looks ahead to its next major expansion beyond Dawntrail, the prospect of retiring PS4 support appears increasingly likely, marking the end of an era for one of the most successful MMOs in history.
