With the gaming world rapidly shifting towards digital storefronts, GameStop, the dominant US video game retailer, has been navigating persistent difficulties. Yet, a new teaser revealed today suggests the retail giant has a big surprise brewing.

Yes, you read that right. It’s not just games teasing an announcement nowadays, but even video game retailers are getting in on the act, too.

GameStop Hints at “Something New” That’s Pure Old School

The official X (formerly Twitter) account released a teaser today in the form of a video where the retailer says “something new is coming soon,” and we get a glimpse of what appears to be an old school arcade.

Check it out below, as I’m sure there are clues hidden there that I’ve missed.

There is also a follow-up tweet that directs users to the GameStop website, where they can sign up for updates.

What does this mean, exactly? Search me. Is GameStop hinting that they’re opening an old-school arcade? I wouldn’t be opposed to that. Is GameStop buying the Dave & Buster’s restaurant chain? Are all the GameStops being converted to nostalgia places where people can play old arcade games? We can’t say for sure. If you’re curious what it is, I suggest signing up.

GameStop, which was formerly known as Babbage’s, was founded in 1984 before rebranding as GameStop in 1999. It soon became a powerhouse in the retail industry, shooting to become the No. 1 video game retailer in the United States. At its peak, GameStop had over 6,000 retail outlets across the country.

While that number has significantly dwindled over time due to the popularity of online retail stores and how more and more game companies are pushing for digital sales, GameStop still has over 3,000 store locations in the US as of February 2025.

In 2022, the company announced its crypto token and NFT marketplace, which I assume didn’t take off, given we don’t hear about it anymore.

Will this new gimmick of GameStop work? For the sake of the company’s employees, I hope it does.
