A group of modders has released an ambitious project that turns Minecraft: Java Edition into a fully playable version of Portal 2, complete with authentic mechanics, dozens of puzzles, and even a level editor.
The project, titled Portal: Java Edition, launched on August 22, 2025, after nearly five years in development. Built entirely with resource and data packs, it doesn’t technically qualify as a traditional “mod,” yet it manages to replicate almost all of Portal 2’s signature gameplay systems. Players can experiment with working portals, lasers, light bridges, and mobility gels, all seamlessly integrated into Minecraft’s blocky world.
At release, the mod includes 50 handcrafted puzzles spread across eight map packs, offering hours of content for fans of Valve’s 2011 classic. Once those challenges are conquered, the built-in level editor lets players design their own test chambers. Using Minecraft’s familiar construction tools, creators can place red buttons, companion cubes, and other Portal-inspired elements to craft custom scenarios and share them with others.
To run the mod, players need a copy of Minecraft: Java Edition on PC and a download from GitHub. While it is technically compatible with vanilla Minecraft, the creators recommend using additional tools to ensure smoother performance, as the complexity of the systems can be demanding on hardware. Launching may also require reverting to an older Minecraft build, something fully supported by the official game launcher.
By blending the sandbox freedom of Minecraft with the precision puzzles of Portal 2, Portal: Java Edition demonstrates the creativity and dedication of the modding community. It not only revives one of Valve’s most celebrated games in a new form but also gives players limitless opportunities to expand it further with their own designs.
