Square Enix is looking ahead to the future of the Final Fantasy Tactics franchise as it prepares to release Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles on September 30, 2025. The remaster, designed to modernize the 1997 strategy RPG, includes updated visuals, improved battle mechanics, and full voice acting while remaining faithful to the original game’s narrative and mechanics. Available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Steam for $50 USD, the remaster is positioned as both a celebration of a classic title and a potential gauge for the series’ commercial viability in today’s market.

In a recent interview, director Kazutoyo Maehiro indicated interest in revisiting the franchise’s Game Boy Advance sequels, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance and Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift, if the remaster performs well. Maehiro acknowledged that the strategy RPG genre currently appeals to a niche audience, but emphasized that strong sales could encourage Square Enix to invest further in the franchise, potentially including new projects, remasters, or sequels.

The development of The Ivalice Chronicles was complicated by the loss of the original source code. To reconstruct the game, the team relied on various versions from the PlayStation, PSP, and mobile ports, supplemented by fan-maintained archives. Maehiro credited the dedicated fan community for preserving game data, which played a crucial role in enabling the remaster.

While Square Enix has not disclosed exact sales targets, industry observers suggest that commercial performance will likely determine the series’ trajectory. Analysts note that the modern strategy RPG market, though smaller than mainstream genres, still shows strong engagement among devoted fans, making the reception of Ivalice Chronicles an important indicator.

As the launch date approaches, anticipation is high. Fans of the franchise hope that the remaster’s success will not only revive interest in Final Fantasy Tactics but also open the door for renewed attention to its sequels and broader universe. The coming months will be pivotal, as the performance of The Ivalice Chronicles may shape the next chapter of one of Square Enix’s most storied strategy RPG series.
